Ryde DCP
In 2026, the City of Ryde became one of the first councils in Australia to formally recognise neurodiversity within its Development Control Plan (DCP).
Introduced by Councillor Tina Kordrostami, this initiative acknowledges that the built environment can significantly influence wellbeing, participation, and inclusion for people with diverse cognitive and sensory needs.
The inclusion of neurodiversity principles in the DCP represents an important step towards creating more accessible, inclusive, and human-centred communities.
By encouraging considerations such as sensory experiences, wayfinding, legibility, and access to quiet spaces, Ryde is helping shape environments that work better for everyone.

Neurodiverse Children
Inclusive education does not just regard spatial design features and various considerations shown towards sensory sensitivities.
To promote inclusivity within the education setting, curriculum's must be evolved into a far more adaptable and flexible structure as every neurodiverse child's needs are unique and varied as per their diagnosis, environment and upbringing.
This paired with various design principles, can ensure triggers are reduced, behaviors are better managed and the rate of suspension is significantly reduced.

MHA recognises the Importance of Reverse Inclusion in Designing Public Spaces for Neurodiverse Individuals.
Reverse inclusion flips the traditional model by designing public spaces primarily around the needs of neurodiverse individuals, rather than attempting to fit them into neurotypical environments.
This approach fosters true inclusivity by prioritising sensory-friendly elements, clear wayfinding, and flexible, low-stimulation zones that benefit not only neurodivergent users but the broader community as well. By centring neurodiverse experiences, reverse inclusion challenges one-size-fits-all design and promotes equitable access, comfort, and dignity for everyone in public life.
